Book Flourishes

This is also known as decorative ornaments or text embellishments. These extra elements by themselves don’t enhance the story, but can make for a nicer presentation.

A few common types of Book Flourishes:

  • Dingbats: Small images that are often used on Titles or Front Matter pages. Primarily used for large blank space.
  • Narrative Breaks: Often used to indicate a point of view change or location in the middle of a chapter.
  • Chapter/Story End: Images placed to signify the end of a chapter or the end of your story.
  • Headers: Used with chapters numbers or titles.
  • Page Numbers Brackets: Special art used around page numbers to stand out.
  • Chapter Title Brackets: Similar to Page Numbers Brackets, this surrounds your Chapter Title.
  • Page Corners: For special pages such as Dedications page or Acknowledgements. Not for Chapters themselves.
  • Drop Caps: The first letter is enlarged or uses a special design. Can also be a few words of the first paragraph of a chapter.

Most of these kinds of elements can be featured in a print book, but not all for an eBook. Since text text in an eBook can be resized, some of these images will mesh into the words or other images.

We only charge for their placement in your book, and not for the design itself. We have a library of designs to choose from. Most images will have a placement cost of $0.15. This doesn’t sound like much, but consider if you want Chapter title Brackets with Dropcaps. That is 3 images, or $0.45 per chapter. You have 20 chapters, that becomes, $9. Perhaps you have two Narrative Breaks per chapter as well… that is now $14.

The above example would only be for one book format. If you wanted all 3 formats, you would be charged for each format separately. So if you wanted Amazon, Smaswords, and Createspace, that $14 would turn into $42.

Below is a sample of some flourishes that we can use and how they might appear.
