What’s It Like to Write a Writing Help Book

In one word: Tedious.

You thought writing a book was hard enough, but doing a writing help book is a whole other beast.

I’m sure if you ask Angela Ackerman or Joanna Penn, they might tell you all the joy they had in doing their help books. It is a lot of fun to do, but right at the beginning, it is a lot of research, and putting in an organized way, so you can then write your book from that.

It’s where I am right now. I have the information, but the phase I’m at right now is trying to make sense of it, so I can further organize it in a more logical, if not unique way. Basically, I am creating a method of character design. Something I use. Now my methodology is highly complex. I am taking a part of that process and sharing with all of you, and trying to make money off of it. Believe you me, if money wasn’t so important to me, I’d give this away for free, much like my Worldbuilding series.

My help book will provide sample characters to start off of, but there are quite a many sample characters, and I am trying to get in their head. Not easy to do. Without giving too much away, I have over 10 categories, and over 10 subcategories, and each category takes me 2 – 3 days to complete. Once I finish that, then I have to go back and double check my work to make sure everything is correct. It sounds easy, but it is as tedious as the step before it, the one I’m on now.

My advice if you ever want to have a Writing Help Book, is to do something you are very passionate about. Part of my doing this is for me, so I can have a more complete resource at my fingertips. However, in designing this, I am going above and beyond, to make sure it is the absolute best I can do, for the potential customers I have.

This does take a lot out of me, and I have to take a lot of breaks. But so far, it is looking like my efforts are in the right direction. As best as I can tell, I’m 36% done with this stage.
