Updates and Gift Ideas

In my last post for #IWSG, I reported that I was facing the possibility of being homeless. Now I did make my asking goal, but someone also came forward and offered me a place to live. Next month, I am leaving my home in Arizona and moving to Pennsylvania (near Philadelphia).

This is a big move for me. The person I am moving in with is aware of my limitations and we have worked out an arrangement. In return, I have somewhere to stay for a year to a year and a half. It’s not a permeate solution, but it is a solution nonetheless. I feel that if I had another year for my writing career, I could make something of it. Tall order, I know, but at this point, I have to make it work. This is the backup plan to my backup plan. This or nothing. I’m determined.

As far as what I have collected, I verified with those who donated to me that they are all right with me using this money to move. So no issues there. And as I stated early on, this is money that I borrowed, it is not a gift, and when I’m in a better position, I will pay it forward to someone who needs help like I needed.

Speaking of which, there is the holiday season. If you’re a writer like me, you have a lot of people who want to gift, but lacks the funds to do it. However, we are not without options. Something I did last year, and will likely do this year, is make a special, unique, copy of my book. Now, because I hand-code my ebook for Amazon, this is easy for me to do, but you can do the same in Word/Open Office and save as a PDF file.

What I do is take my cover, and add the person’s name. So I might say, “Mercedes Carrera Edition”. Then in the foreword section (if you don’t have one, make one), give a special message to the person. Then I give them the file. A writer friend of mine stated that this is equivalent to receiving an autographed copy of my book.

Don’t have a book? Do a story, special for the holiday season.

None of your friends will read it? That’s on them, not on you. Whether they read it or not is irrelevant. It would be great if they did, but the most important thing is they acknowledge the effort. Yes, money can go a long way to bring joy to someone, but lacking money… time and effort can be a good present.

When I did this last year, very few people actually read it, and only a few remembered receiving it. That does feel crummy. I tell you this so you are aware that it happens. Despite living in the digital world, we still require things that we can hold and feel, and a digital copy is not something we can hold or feel, and thus has less impact.

So when you give this gift of time and effort, be sure that you give it to those who can truly appreciate it. Or, if you don’t mind they will forget about it the second you give it, then gift it to everyone you like, but be sure it is unique for that person.

I wish everyone Happy Holiday’s and a Happy New Year, and invite everyone to join me as I make 2016 my year to shine.
