Countdown to NaNo – On Writing

Participant-2014-Twitter-ProfileOne of the unfortunate things about my disability is that it affects my ability to read. I can read words just fine, it is reading books that takes a bit out of me. Which is why I spent two days looking at Stephen King’s On Writing.

On Writing is an autobiography by Stephen King, but not in the tradition sense. It is a book dedicated to what made him a writer and what writing means to him. While he does go off on a tangent here and there, for the most part, it has a lot of good insight into the man and the craft.

The book was released in year 2000, but I didn’t get my copy until 2005. Since then, I read it once or twice a year. I did so right before I started a major project. I was looking for inspiration. Nine years later, I’ve probably read the book 10 – 15 times.

If I were to give the book a score, it would likely get a 94%. Why such a low score? After reading it as many times as I have, I really don’t care to read his personal life BS. I’ve read it enough times that it is now boring to me. While it is important for Stephen, it doesn’t inspire me to become a writer.

Last year I read it before NaNoWriMo, so this year I read it again. However, this time I skimmed through it and only looked at the parts that talked about writing. My book is also falling apart, so if anyone wants to get me a Christmas gift, hint hint.

The first section is the autobiographical part, then is followed by making your own toolbox. After that, it was his views on the craft itself. It is a very good read and you gain insights into writing that no high school or college teacher can give you. I gain inspiration of it, but I don’t look too deeply. My style often differs from King and I don’t want to replace what works for me; on the same token, I could use improvement on my technique and King does provide one avenue for that.

I’m not excited for NaNo, rather I am happy to start writing again. I’m sure I will feel the adrenaline pumping when it all starts, but for now, I am calm and relaxed. Unfortunately, my mind is overworked from reading the last few hours today and yesterday, so I may not be able to do anything else tonight. We’ll see.
