So, quite a bit to talk about in this one. I try to reserve IWSG for the woes in life but too many good things have happened as of late for me to do that. Going forward, I hope the good times continue.
Of course saying that, I’m inviting impending doom. But talking about the impending doom will bring me good fortune. It all works out in the end.
I need $125 by October 30th, 2017. Anything you can give will help.
So… where to start?
Well, let’s start at the beginning. Phoenix Comicon. Early in the month of June, I went to Phoenix comicon. I also have a lot of pictures of it, so I am going to fill this post with pictures of that event. Due to my condition, it was a very difficult 3 days of my life. I in fact had 5 energy drinks spread out through those 3 days, and it was still hell on my mind. Stupid disability. Let’s not forget my flat feet either.
But, it was worth going to. I met a lot of authors. I think I might have impressed one or two. For whatever it is worth, I got myself known. I handed out business cards, I showcased my art work. I met a lot of interesting people. Not just authors either, I met many artist as well. The unfortunate part is that due to my disability; I have next to no memory of it. Pictures help a little, I get flashes of memories, and a bit of conversation. Beyond that, I draw a blank when I try to think about it.
The next big thing was my social security disability. I’m not on SSDI yet, but it is moving forward. My first bit of good news on that was when I got scheduled for an appointment with a Doctor for a mental exam, then a physical exam. This is done since I haven’t seen a doctor in a years time. Not exactly the best of news, but at the very least, the case is moving forward. The chances of me getting disability the first time is not in my favor. I am already prepared for that, but like I said, at least things are moving forward.
However, there is big news to come from all of that. I am now on AHCCCS. For those who don’t know, that is Arizona Medicaid. After a year without, I now have medical insurance. I can finally go to a doctor to get treated for a few things that ails me, including my Post Concussion Syndrome. I’ve put my writing on hold (and it pains me to do that) while I try to find a good doctor to go to. I’ve been screwed over in the past by doctors and staff, so I want to be extra careful in my next move. I believe I have found my doctor of choice and fingers crossed if I can’t start a treatment plan soon.
Now initially I was going to do my own Convention entirely online. I called it the Madness Blog-Con, where I was going to feature people I met and events I went to, and describe the experience of going. I have a few fans that never had been to one and I wanted to do something nice for them. I thought it was a good idea and I still do, but after a week, I ditched the idea. Partly because it had a low reception. I could had tried harder to make something of it, but it required me to make 2 – 3 posts a day for a whole month. I didn’t like doing 1 post everyday for the month of April for the AtoZ Blog Challenge. It was just too much.
The main reason actually takes me back to comicon, and has led me on a new journey. As I mentioned, I showed as many people as I could my worldbuilding maps. Many many people were impressed, especially knowing I had no artistic ability. Other artists convincing me I am an artist (beyond being a writer). One person, who was a novelist, suggested I post my stuff and join the Worldbuilding community on Reddit. Let me tell you, that one bit of advice has changed things for myself, in a good way.
Prior to June, I had 1500 views on my blog since I started this specific blog in March. I initially started my new blog in December, but moved it to my own server and my stats started over. On June 11th, I posted my tutorial on reddit. Prior to this day, I had a record of 86 blog views in a single day. June 11th, I got 185. I shattered my old record. But the record breaking didn’t stop there. I also got 113 views the next day, so nearly 300 views in two days.
A week later, I reported that I got to 2000 total views on my blog. All thanks to my worldbuilding series. In months prior, except for April, I was lucky to get 10 views a day, and often got less than that. Now, I generally get 20 views a day at the very least. Some days being better than others. On June 28th, I had a major surge of views and got 148 views and also reported 1000 blog views for the month of June. I generally averaged prior to June 300 views a month, and would have taken me 3 months to get that.
On June 29th, I beat my record of most views in 1 day. From 185 on June 11th to 358. 358!? Is it me, or is there a pattern here? When I beat my views in one day, I practically double it. From 86, to 185, to 358. Let me put this in perspective for you. For the month of March, I got 344 views total. In one day I surpassed that. More than that, I got to the 3000 mark for total views of my blog. And to complete the last day of the month, I got 150 views. 3 day period I had over 650 views. For the total month of June, I got 1631 views. My biggest before June was April at 769. I shattered that record.
I know it seems like I’m bragging. If anything, I’m more shocked and amazed than bragging. Something that is true for being a writer, but definitely imperative when you are disabled is celebrating the small things. It might seem silly, but any small thing that is good, no matter how insignificant, you need to celebrate that like it is a big deal. You also need to learn to celebrate on your own. The *few* friends I have, they give a passing congrats, and then the moment passes. It doesn’t sound like a big deal, and perhaps its not. But for me, it is. I’ve had 6 total blogs in my lifetime, and this is the first time I’ve had a successful one.
June may simply be a fluke, and it may drop down again to a few a day. But July 1st, I had 150 views, and as of writing this I have 53 views. So I am guessing that it is not. There is hot demand for my worldbuilding series, and I will deliver that as much as I can. Don’t worry, I will still do my other articles as well.
In light of this success, you will start to notice advertisement on my site. I debated if I should, and ultimately I decided to do it. I’ve tried to make them not too distracting. Having a domain name and server costs money and I hope that a few ads can help me out. Though if you really want to help me, please buy my book.
However, in light of June being a record breaking month, I am introducing a new contest. Up top when you hover over contest, you will see Madness Bundle Giveaway. Essentially, as a thank you to my fans… I am giving away a copy of Scraping By (my first book), Terran Psychosis (my second book), Book #1 of Daygar Legacy (when released), and a personalized unique map for you to use however you want.
There is also additional prizes. For now it is just a copy of my two books, but the more people enter, the more prizes that will be available. Authors, if you want to donate to the giveaway, you are welcome to. To enter, just go to the contest page and leave a post on bottom. It can be through WordPress, Facebook, Twitter… any social media network you want. So long as I can see your name (or avatar), you can post anything you want or simply leave it blank. Up to you. On July 31st, I will reveal who wins what, and they have one week to respond back to me. If not, their prize is forfeit and it goes to the next contest winner. Remember, the more people enter, the more prizes there will be, so tell your friends. Just leave a post.
In the end, my message for you is that if you want success, keep at it. I started the Worldbuilding series in January, and it has taken 6 months and over 12 articles for it to be successful. Nothing grand is ever easy and if you want to be known, you got to work hard for it. We live in a culture that wants things immediately. Posting my Worldbuilding series in June on reddit, I gave people the satisfaction they could see results by following my tutorial and not waiting for the next one and getting bored.
Success is about timing, effort, motivation, and marketing. So get out there and keep working until you make it. If I can do it despite my disabilities, you can do it. Believe in yourself and anything is possible. Even walking through walls, if you believe strongly enough… it will happen. Try it now. *THUD* OK, maybe not, but how did it feel right before you hurt yourself… I imagine very good.
