Text Interview

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Kimberly Daniels, and I write Science Fiction under K. S. Daniels. I have my Masters in English and taught at the University of South Alabama for several years.  Now I spend most of my time writing and animal wrangling. I’ve got four pets, all but one of them are rescues. I’m married and have one daughter who is also quite artistic, though, she prefers drawing to writing.

Do you consider yourself a character driven writer, or a plot driven writer?

Both really, but I suppose I do lean more towards character; to me the story must always be about them. You can have the best plot in the world, but if your readers aren’t invested in the characters, then the plot cannot have the impact it needs for the story to be that best it can be. I spend a great deal of time getting to know my characters before pen is put to paper. They need to be real in my mind before they can be real on the page.

What is your favorite sport and team?

I’m from the South, so we are all about college football. At heart, I’m an Auburn University fan, but I like to root for any SEC team (provided they’re not playing Auburn, of course). As far as what sports I like to play, I love basketball and tennis.

Where were you born, where did you grow up, and where do you live now?

I grew up in Jackson, Alabama, but lived most of my adult life in Mobile, Alabama, which is on the Gulf Coast. Last year I moved over to the New Orleans area and I love it. We’ve got some of the best cuisine in the world here–lots of seafood and teeming with Creole and French influence.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I’d have to say London. I love British humor and culture, and I’m a bit of a sucker for a British accent. I’d also love to live Singapore for a while. The way I see it, there’s a big damn world out there, and I aim to visit as much of it as I can.

What writers inspire you?

As far as Science Fiction goes, my biggest influences are Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Andre Norton, and Philip K. Dick. I grew on these guys, and I think my style of writing illustrates that. I also take a lot of inspiration from the classics, specifically British literature. I love Jane Eyre, Frankenstein, Brave New World, Great Expectations, etc.

What is your favorite food, color, and ice cream flavor?

I love sushi and lots of fruits and vegetables. Avocados, Artichokes, Spinach, and tomatoes especially. I don’t really care for ice cream, to be honest. I’m mostly vegetarian, so I consume very little dairy products.  My favorite color is grey, with purple as a close second.

When you write, what is your drink of choice?

Usually coffee, but sometimes tea or hot apple cider.

Tell us about your current books and future releases?

My first book, The Valkyrie Profiles, debuted last year. The second book in the Valkyrie Series, Flight of the Valkyrie, comes out this month (June), and I’m already working on the third book. It will most likely be a four-book series, though it began as a trilogy.

How much control do you feel you have on the outcome of your story? Do you have complete control or are you along for the ride?

I’d say I’m in control about 70% of the time. I like to outline, but not so much that there is no room for things to shift and change if that is what the story needs (or the characters want).  I know where it will all end essentially, my outline is my atlas, but how we get there depends on the characters.

Front Cover JPEG - NO BLEEDKimberly S. Daniels is a recovering academic, who spent four years teaching English Composition and Literature at the University of South Alabama. She’ll never truly recover, but regularly attends meeting for her condition. In the meantime, she writes Science Fiction (Genre fiction! Oh, My!) and consumes copious amounts of coffee and whiskey (not necessarily together or in that order). When she’s not busy writing, much like a cat, she enjoys napping, running suddenly into a randomly selected room, and plotting the destruction of mankind. She exhibits a curious interest robots, leading to the widespread rumor that she may, in fact, be one herself.

Her current projects include the third installment of the Valkyrie Trilogy and various short stories. Her first novel, The Valkyrie Profiles, was a quarter finalist for Amazon’s Breakthrough Novel Award in 2013 and the second novel, Flight of the Valkyries debuted in May of 2014 to much fanfare (read: she threw confetti at herself). She also has a prequel short story in the Valkyrie Trilogy, Children of Ymir, that is a Kindle exclusive and another short story in the second Lunar’s Children anthology by Dark Oak Press titled Chimera, which began as horror but somehow still managed to end up as Science Fiction. Much to her own surprise, she currently lives in New Orleans, LA. eating as many raw oysters as robotically possible (that’s a lot of oysters) and working on yet another time machine.

“The plot is an incredibly intriguing one, and it certainly picks up after a few revealing details.”

“It’s hard to say much without giving the story away but I can say that there are a few twists in the plot that you probably won’t expect.”

DL - T5 - Smashwords Cover miniRead the series that makes vampires a scary monster in the shadows once more, and the bravery of knights as the one weapon to stop their spread of a deadly disease.

[Author] writing is powerful and inspite of absence of gory descriptions, the fear factor exists. There is an aura of fear and valour at the same time.
