Worldbuilding Update — Fixing a Mistake

WB IconWhile developing new techniques to help other writer’s make a map for you their book, I discovered a problem with the map. There is a graphical mistake done. I have gone back and corrected the mistake in the articles, so if you are starting from scratch, you won’t run into the issue. I added an extra step.

This mistake occurred during article Worldbuilding #5 – Ocean Depth and Land Texture when after making the texture for land, I had you add noise to the land, then do Gaussian Blur. Guassian blur is a way of reducing noise by blurring the image. I had you do the noise and the blur to make the land look textured. But it has an unfortunate side effect.

mistake

Just looking at your map, you won’t notice this. If you don’t know if you have this problem, turn off all layers except the Land Start, Lakes, and Deep Water and zoom up on your lakes. If you see what I have in the picture above, then you need to correct the problem.

Now this problem doesn’t seem like a big deal, as your beach covers it up, and layers below it (which it will absorb due to the transparency) will absorb the colours. However, to do some of the advanced techniques and other lessons, it will affect your final result.

How to Fix

If you started the project from the beginning after this article was made (5/25/2014), then you don’t need to worry. If you started the project before then and got past article 5, then the fix is simple. But like everything, it can be a bit tedious.

1. Create a new Layer
a. Set new Layer below Land Start.

2. Set Colors
a. Set Primary Color: 00FF7F
b. Set Secondary Color: 007F37

3. Effect -> Render -> Cloud
a. Go to layer Lakes
b. Using Magic Wand, set on Global, select the open area
c. Invert selection
d. Go to new Layer, then press delete

Your lakes should be without the cloud render.

4. Go to Deep Ocean layer
a. Select Land with Magic Wand
b. Invert selection
c. Go to new Layer, press delete

Now, all the areas that were transparent, are now filled with colour. It’s perfect, but it is the best solution.

Lastly, merge the two layers together. Click on Land start and merge Layer down to New Layer. The rename new layer to Land Start.

Next article we’ll be doing the advanced technique for Beaches, then the one after that is Shallow Water.
