Worldbuilding #6 – Beaches and Shallow Water

tools of the tradeWelcome to another edition of the worldbuilding series. Today we tackle Beaches and Shallow Water. Now that we have shaped what our land looks like and what the deep water of the ocean looks like, we can now start shaping our world.

This will be a two part article, where I will show you a basic technique that is more uniform and then show you another technique that is a bit more dynamic.

I do apologize for not doing an article in the month of April due to the A to Z challenge being more work than I had expected.

This site is a great achievement for me, but due to being unable to work, I may not be able to keep this site running. With your help, I might be able to.

Beaches

Not too much to say on either topic that affects worldbuilding. With beaches, we are looking at erosion caused by the ocean on the land. It is a continuous process but a very slow one. The beach can expand or shrink dependent on the ocean, weather, and a number of other variables. It is the area that protects the land from the ocean.

So let’s open up our file.

1. Create New Layer
a. Make sure the new layer is on top
b. Name: Beach
c. Set Magic Wand to Global
d. Set Tolerance between 55% – 65%
e. Go to World Base Layer (make sure it is highlight blue) *Note: You can uncheck this layer, we no longer need the visual
f. Select the Land

2. Now the land is selected, go to Beach Layer
a. Tool: Effect->Selection->Outline Selection
b. Outline Width: 2 – 10

Given my large land mass, I set it to 4, but if you have a smaller map, set it as low as 2.

c. R: 229; G: 205; B: 52
d. Check both boxes
The goal here is to make the beach thin but noticeable.

e. If the wand is not deselected, press escape
f. With the magic wand, select the yellow strip

If it is too thin to select, select the middle of nowhere, then invert the selection. Make sure magic wand is set to global

g. Tool: Effect -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur
h. Set Radius: 2

What this has done is make the edge of it blurred and transparent, so it appears more a part of the land. Now you have beaches for your land. You’ll note that a number of islands are all beach. That’s OK to do, or you can go and erase them if you want some to be green. Be sure you are in Beach layer.

Shallow Water

Not much to say here. Shallow water that makes travel easy, even with a small boat. It hosts a lot of life and helps with fishing. Today we’ll do a simple technique almost exactly as we did beaches.

1. Create a New Layer
a. Make sure it is on top
b. Name: Shallow Water
c. Make sure Magic Wand is set to Continuous
d. Go to Deep Water Layer (it is selected blue)
e. Select the Ocean
f. Go to to the Shallow Waters layer
g. Tool: Effect -> Selection -> Outline Selection
h. Set Outline Width between 7 – 10. I chose 10 for mine
i. Set R: 0; G: 255; B: 255
j. Check both boxes

If you set it too low, you may get gaps. You can undo your work and try a higher width. You can do another width again if you want. I prefer to set my color to 00FFFF, use the paintbucket to fill in any gaps and use the pencil to close other gaps to my liking. Do as much or as little as you like.

k. Set Magic Wand to Global
l. Select the shallow water
m. In the Color box, hit More (if you see less, you are fine)
n. On the bottom, you will see Transparency Alpha. Set it between 25 – 75. I chose 50.
o. Click on the window for the program, then hit backspace.

Everything will be a light blue. Change this transparency around to get desired effect.

p. Make sure everything is deselected.
q. Tool: Effect -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur
r. Set Radius to 2

And there you have it. You now have a beach and shallow water. You may even notice how many small islands we have…which is a lot. If you want a copy of my map to play around with my tutorial, please post a comment below and I will make it available. Here is a picture of what I have so far.

Worldbuilding Project 2

Next article, I will show you how to take this to the next level. Please post below any questions or comments you have. And if there was something I can add or miss, please post it below as well. Thank you.
